Bluejay Softball Team Swept at Wheaton

WHEATON, Ill. - The Elmhurst softball team slid to 3-5 in CCIW play after dropping both ends of a doubleheader at Wheaton College. The Bluejays dropped the opener 10-1 and fell 10-4 in game two.

WHEATON 10, ELMHURST 1 (Game One) - Wheaton played long ball in the opener, driving in eight runs while slugging three home runs.

Wheaton (19-12, 9-1 CCIW) took a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning on Ellen Radandt's two-run homer. A two-run shot from Becky Leone and and an RBI single from Katie Thornton gave the Thunder a five-run cushion after two innings.

Elmhurst scored its only run in the third inning. Bella Masini singled with two outs. Alyssa Jasinski followed with a single to right that misplayed by Wheaton, allowing Masini to come around and score. 

Wheaton scored five times in the bottom of the fifth to earn a 10-1 walk-off win by virtue of the eight-run rule. Christina Sandstedt capped the win by cracking a walk-off grand slam.

Masini, Jasinski and Meg Griffin collected one hit apiece for the Bluejays.

Stefanie Sanidas took the loss for Elmhurst, working four innings and allowing eight hits and six runs. She walked one while fanning six. Thornton picked up the win for Wheaton, tossing all five innings and allowing just one unearned run. She walked one and struck out five.
 
WHEATON 10, ELMHURST 4 (Game Two) – Wheaton raced out to a quick 8-0 lead before holding off the Bluejays for a 10-4 win.

The two teams combined for 32 hits in the contest. Elmhurst (18-12 overall) had no shortage of chances, but the Bluejays' stranded 13 runners on base in the loss.
 
Wheaton continued to hit home runs in game two. A two-Run shot from Thornton in the first inning and a three-run blast from Sandstedt along with solo homers from Radandt and Thornton in the third helped stake the Thunder to an early 8-0 lead.
 
Elmhurst left six runners on base over the first two innings before getting on the scoreboard in the fourth. An Ele Walter grounder helped drive in Mikayla Melone. A wild pitch and an RBI double from Brianna Thompson accounted for a pair of Elmhurst runs in the fifth. The Bluejays closed to within four in the sixth inning after an RBI single from Masini.
 
Wheaton tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the seventh inning as Sandstedt blasted her third home run of the day and a sacrifice fly tacked on the final run for the Thunder.
 
Thompson led Elmhurst at the plate, finishing a perfect 4-for-4 with an RBI. Melone collected three hits while Tiffany Potthast, Masini and Jasinski each totaled two hits.
 
Thornton paced the Thunder at the plate, finishing 4-for-4 with two runs scored and three driven in. Sandstedt finished 2-for-4 with two homers and four RBIs.

Katie Boals took the loss for the Bluejays, working 2.1 innings and allowing nine hits and eight runs while striking out two. Thornton picked up the victory for the Thunder, tossing four innings and allowing seven hits and one run.
 
Elmhurst hosts Carthage College on Thursday, April 23.
