BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Elmhurst women's basketball team secured the number three seed in the upcoming CCIW tournament by scoring an 82-75 win over Illinois Wesleyan, finishing a season sweep of the Titans for the first time since the 1999 season.
Elmhurst (16-9, 9-5 CCIW) led for nearly the entire contest, taking a lead just two minutes into the contest and never looking back. A 12-0 run early in the first half gave the Bluejays' an 11-point cushion. The Bluejays led by as many as 19 points and carried a 41-24 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Illinois Wesleyan (10-15, 4-10) surged back in the second half. Trailing by 16 with 16 minutes remaining, the Titans used a 25-11 over the next nine minutes to pull to within two points. Elmhurst led 66-63 with six minutes remaining and used a 12-0 run over the next 3:30 to take a 15-point lead and put the game out of reach.
Elmhurst shot 53.4 percent (31-of-58) from the field, including 31.3 percent (5-of-16) from downtown. The Bluejays hit 15-of-16 (93.8 percent) from the free throw line. Elmhurst won the battle on the glass, outrebounding the Titans 42-28.
Fiona McMahon poured in 37 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to pace Elmhurst in the win. Mikaela Eppard added 16 points and nine boards while Hannah Lipman totaled nine points and seven rebounds. Claire Monroe added nine points for the Bluejays.
The Titans shot 43.1 percent (28-of-65) from the floor, including 4-of-10 (40.0 percent) from downtown. Molly McGraw led the Titans with 26 points while Kasey Reaber totaled 17 points and seven rebounds.,The Bluejays will face North Central College (seeded second) in the first round of the CCIW tournament next Friday (February 27) at Wheaton College. Tip-off is schedule for 5:00 p.m. Wheaton, the tournament host and top-seed, will face Carthage at 7:00 p.m.
