Elmhurst Loses Tight Battle Against Loras

ELMHURST, Ill. - In a game where neither team led by more than seven, a 15-6 game-ending run propelled Loras College to a 73-69 victory over the Elmhurst women's basketball team. 

Elmhurst (4-4) led by five after a Michaela Kumer three-pointer with 3:24 left to play, but Loras' (4-2) game-ending run clinched the victory.

The teams traded runs in a first quarter that included one tie and five lead changes. After Elmhurst took a 14-13 lead on a Lisa Logan jumper, Loras finished the quarter on an 8-3 run and went into the first break up 21-17.

Three minutes into the second quarter, the Duhawks took a game-high seven-point lead on a three-pointer by Megan Jones. The Bluejays fought back with a 10-2 run, which culminated with a Claire Monroe three-pointer to give Elmhurst its first lead in over 10 minutes. After Loras answered with a pair of free throws, Mikaela Eppard converted on an old-fashioned three-point play to put the Bluejays in front again. Elmhurst outscored the Duhawks 21-14 in the second quarter to take a three-point lead into halftime (38-35). Eppard led the way with 15 points, four rebounds, and three assists in the first half.

?Loras scored the first seven points of the third quarter to take a four-point lead and led by as much as seven in the quarter. Elmhurst scored six straight points behind Hannah Hendersen and three Mikaela Eppard free throws to cut the deficit and the teams traded free throws for the rest of the quarter with Loras taking a 53-50 lead. 

In the fourth, Elmhurst opened up with a 5-0 run. In the quarter, the teams traded blows and neither team led by more than three until Kumer knocked down a three-pointer with 3:24 to play. Lisa Logan and Kumer combined for all eight points in an 8-1 run that propelled the Bluejays to a five-point lead, their largest of the quarter. Loras quickly answered with a run of its own, capped by a Kat Cabrera three-pointer to retake the lead. The Duhakws outscored the Bluejays 7-4 the rest of the way to take the victory. 

Eppard led the Bluejays with a game-high 22 points, including 10-14 from the free-throw line. She also narrowly missed a double-double, pulling down nine rebounds. Kaela Jones also reached double-figures with 10, while Erika Johnson finished with eight. 

Elmhurst shot 37-percent from the field and 33-percent from downtown. The Bluejays only turned the ball over 10 times, while forcing 15 from the Duhawks. 

Loras dominated the boards, outrebounding Elmhurst 43-27 behind eight rebound nights from Lori Obendorf (11 points) and Kaitlin Phillips (15 points). Kat Cabrera (21 points) and Terese McMahon (12 points) joined Obendorf and Phillips in double-figures. 

Elmhurst looks to snap its losing streak when they travel to UW-Platteville on Wednesday, December 9. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
