Monroe's Career Day Carries Bluejays Past Millikin

ELMHURST, Ill. – Claire Monroe scored a career-high 21 points to lead the Elmhurst women's basketball team to its first season sweep of Millikin since the 1991 season.

Elmhurst improved to 12-8 overall and 5-4 in the CCIW breaking, the three-way tie for third-place in the CCIW standings in the process.
 
Elmhurst led from wire-to-wire, scoring the game's opening points and never allowing Millikin to take the lead for the remainder of the contest.

The Bluejays opened the game on a 16-8 run before Millikin sliced the lead down to two with 5:37 left in the half. Elmhurst responded by closing the half on an 11-5 run to build a 34-26 lead at the half.
 
Millikin (13-7, ,4-5 CCIW) scored the opening bucket of the second half to close to within six points, but the Big Blue came no closer as Elmhurst answered back with a 10-2 run sparked by five points from Monroe and a Katie Swanson three-pointer.  Millikin pulled to within an 11-point deficit with 6:21 left, but the Bluejays outscored the Big Blue 13-1 for the remainder of the game to put pull away for the 23-point win.
 
The Bluejays shot 42.4 percent (25-of-59) from the floor, including 38.9 percent (7-of-18) from downtown. Elmhurst also won the battle on the glass, outrebounding Millikin 43-35.
 
Monroe shot 6-of-12 from the floor, including 5-of-8 from three-point range to lead all scorers with a career-high 21 points. She added four rebounds, three assists and two steals in the win. Mikaela Eppard chipped in with 13 points, eight rebounds and four assists while Fiona McMahon added 10 points and six rebounds.

Elmhurst received solid contributions from its bench as Kaela Jones scored seven and Chelsea Samuels and Melanie Schwerdtmann scored six points apiece.
 
Millikin shot 34.9 percent (22-of-63) from the floor and struggled from long distance, hitting just 1-of-10 attempts from beyond the arc.
 
Emma Hoyer came off the bench to lead the Big Blue with 14 points. Hannah Millington added 12 points and five rebounds while Devin Curry scored eight.

Elmhurst hosts Carthage College on Wednesday, February 4. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
