KENOSHA, Wis. - The Elmhurst women's basketball team lead for over 36 minutes of play before falling 68-63 in overtime to Carthage.
The game was a low-scoring affair with Elmhurst (9-6, 2-2 CCIW) grabbing an early 7-5 lead after a
Fiona McMahon three-pointer less than four minutes into the contest. The Bluejays led for the remainder of the half, building a six-point advantage on a pair of occasions and carrying a 22-17 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Carthage (10-4, 4-0 CCIW) scored the first five points of the second half to pull even at 22-22, but back-to-back three-pointer from
Kalia Summerlin quickly put the Bluejays' out in front 28-22. Elmhurst extended its lead to seven points with 6:51 to play and led by five after a McMahon layup with 5:32 left, before Carthage mounted a rally. The Lady Reds used a 7-1 run as Elmhurst was without a field goal for a five-minute duration. Carthage grabbed a 48-46 lead with just 21 seconds left after a Alexis Hahn layup.
Mikaela Eppard delivered the answer for the Bluejays, tip-toeing along the baseline for a reverse layup with just 2.1 seconds left on the clock to send the game to overtime.
In the extra period, Carthage grabbed a 59-54 lead after a Kasey Kleiner three-pointer with 1:50 remaining. Elmhurst sliced the lead down to three with 47 seconds left, but Kleiner buried another three-pointer to put the Lady Reds up by six with 31 seconds left on the clock. Elmhurst fought back, as McMahon hit a three-pointer with 22 seconds left. After a Kleiner free throw,
Hannah Lipman was fouled and hit a pair of free throws to slice Carthage's lead down to just two points (65-63) with 12 seconds remaining. Carthage hit three free throws in the closing seconds to seal the 68-63 victory.
Elmhurst shot 44.2 percent (23-of-52) from the floor, including 29.4 percent (5-of-17) from beyond the arc. Elmhurst hit 12-of-15 from the foul line (80.0 percent). The Bluejays dominated on the glass, outrebounding Carthage 40-22 and outscoring the Lady Reds on second-chance points 12-2. Turnovers plagued the Bluejays as the squad gave the ball away 22 times, results in 22 points for Carthage. Elmhurst could not score off of any of the 11 Carthage turnovers.
McMahon led all scorers with a game-high 27 points while shooting 10-of-13 from the field. She totaled 11 rebounds to record a double-double in the loss.
Hannah Lipman chipped in with 13 points and five rebounds while Eppard totaled 12 points and nine boards. Summerlin added six points for the Bluejays.
Carthage shot 45.3 percent (24-of-53) from the field, including 43.8 percent (7-of-16) from downtown. Hahn paced the Lady Reds in the win with 18 points and six rebounds. Kleiner added 16 points while Taylor Boardman and Erin Quinn scored nine points apiece.
Elmhurst travels to 24th-ranked North Central College on Saturday, January 17.
