Six Unanswered Goals Propel Bluejays over North Park

CHICAGO, Ill. - The Elmhurst women's soccer team scored six unanswered goals to defeat North Park University 6-2 and set up a critical final game of the season against Carthage College on Saturday.

After falling behind 2-0 in the first half, the Bluejays pulled even with the Vikings before halftime and then scored four goal in the second half to pull away. Four different Bluejays scored. Megan Hart and Emily Heimerdinger totaled five points apiece (two goals, one assist) to lead the Bluejays' comeback. 

Emma Lundeen scored both of North Park's goals. In the 13th minute, she found the lower corner off of a pass from Annika Nyquist. Then in the 24th minute, Lundeen found the back of the net off of an assist from Kelci Deal. 

The Bluejays pulled within one just two minutes later. Among traffic in the box, Briana Small smashed a shot home off an assist frm Anna Garritano.

Twelve minutes later, the Bluejays equalized. Bri Gerardi netted the game tying goal after Jackie Belmonte's kick was headed on by Megan Hart to the feet of Gerardi. 

The Bluejays scored four times during a 12-minute span in the second half to take control of the game. Eight minutes into the second half, Heimerdinger put her shot into the bottom right corner to give the Bluejays a 3-2 advantage. Meagan McPherson and Kelly Fredericksen were credited with assists on the goal.

Four minutes later, Heimerdinger gave Elmhurst a two-goal cushion bending a shot through the box and directly into the net.

Heimerdinger tallied an assist on Hart's 65th-minute goal, which gave the Bluejays a 5-2 advantage. Less than a minute later, Hart found the net again. Rion Gaffney assisted on Hart's second goal of the game and team-leading seventh of the season. 

Elmhurst out shot North Park 20-11. Elmhurst scored on six of their nine shots on goal. 

Melinda Vickers played the first half in goal and allowed two goals while recording two saves. Emily Gordon played in the second half and earned the win, stopping two shots and not allowing a goal. Megan Durkee stopped three shots for the Vikings. 

With the win, the Bluejays set up a key matchup with Carthage in their final game of the regular season. The winner of Saturday's game will be the No. 4 seed in the CCIW Tournament. If Carthage and Elmhurst tie, then the CCIW tiebreaking scenarios come into play. 

The battle for the last spot in the CCIW tournament will take place at Langhorst Field this Saturday, November 1 at 5:00 p.m.
