Bluejays Unable to Finish off Wheaton

Box Score WHEATON, Ill. - The Elmhurst women's basketball team was unable to finish off a strong effort at Wheaton College, coming up one-point short in a 57-56 loss to the Thunder.

Elmhurst (11-8, 3-5 CCIW) had a six-point lead slip away in the final six minutes as Wheaton closed the game on an 11-4 run to come away with the victory.

With the game knotted at 42-42 with nine minutes to play, Elmhurst used a 10-4 run over the next three minutes to build a 52-46 lead Three-pointers from Claire Monroe and Melanie Schwerdtmann helped spark the Bluejays' mini-run.

Wheaton (14-5, 5-3 CCIW) quickly answered back, scoring seven straight points, including four from Hannah Considine, to grab a 53-52 lead with 3:28 to play. A bucket by Schwerdtmann put Elmhurst back on top with 3:13 left, but Considine knocked down a jumper with 2:28 left to give the Thunder a 55-54 lead.

Elmhurst had plenty of chances to tie or take the lead in the final two minutes but came up short each time. After a pair of missed free throws by the Bluejays, Wheaton  turned the ball over with 2:05 left on the clock. A missed jumper was rebounded by Schwerdtmann and Elmhurst called time out with 1:36 left and a fresh shot clock. The Bluejays missed two straight shots with Considine grabbing a defensive board and being fouled in the process.

Considine missed the front end of a one-and-one but managed to get her own rebound, leading to a baseline jumper from Ellie Zeller with 11 seconds left to put Wheaton up 57-54. The basket was Wheaton's only second-chance points of the entire contest.

Elmhurst missed a three-pointer with two seconds left and Fiona McMahon's put back dropped through at the buzzer to make the final score 57-56.

Elmhurst shot 36.7 percent (22-of-60) from the floor, including 50.0 percent (6-of-12) from beyond the arc. Wheaton hit 22-of-52 shots (42.3 percent), but missed all eight of its three-point attempts. The Thunder hit 13-of-17 free throw attempts.

Elmhurst pulled down 17 offensive rebounds, resulting in 21 second-chance points. Wheaton managed just two second chance points on 12 offensive boards, but the points came on Zeller's game-winning jumper.

Schwerdtmann led Elmhurst with a double-double in the loss, totaling 14 points and 10 rebounds. McMahon added 10 points while Katie Swanson scored eight and Kim Schwerdtmann came off the bench to score nine.

Zeller paced the Thunder in the win with a game-high 20 points. Katie McDaniels added 11 points and eight rebounds while Considine scored nine for the Thunder.

Elmhurst travels to Millikin University on Saturday, February 1.
