Bluejays Surge Past Augustana on Senior Day

Box Score ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst women's basketball team outscored Augustana 17-1 over the final eight minutes of the contest to earn a 55-44 win on senior day.

The first half featured four turnovers and four ties as Elmhurst led 29-26 at the break.

The Bluejays struggled early in the second half as Augustana (7-17, 2-11 CCIW) pulled in front by three five minutes into the half.

Elmhurst (11-13, 5-8 CCIW) answered back, tying the game on a Claire Monroe 3-pointer and taking the lead on a Kim Schwerdtmann lay-up with 11:52 remaining.

The two squads traded baskets and leads for the next few minutes, until Augustana used a 6-0 run to grab a 43-38 lead with 8:18 to play.

Three straight free throws and a lay-up from Schwerdtmann evened the score at 43-43. Melanie Schwerdtmann put the Bluejays on top for goood with a lay-up with 5:48 to play. Elmhurst continued to pull away, outscoring Augustana 10-1 over the final 5:48 to earn the 55-44 win.

The Bluejays finished the game shooting just 26.9 percent (14-of-52) from the field, including 14.3 percent (3-of-21) from downtown. Elmhurst was solid from the free throw line, converting 24-of-37 attempts (64.9 percent), including 15-of-24 in the second half.

Augustana struggled all game with its shooting, finishing the contest hitting just 24.5 percent (13-of-53) from the floor and 8.3 percent (1-of-12) from downtown.

Elmhurst won the battle on the glass, outrebounding the Vikings 51-36.

Kim Schwerdtmann scored 14 points to pace the Bluejays in her final game at R.A. Faganel Hall. Fiona McMahon finished with a double-double, totaling 12 points and 10 rebounds. Melanie Schwerdtmann came off the bench to score 10 for Elmhurst.

Amy Hicks led the Vikings with 16 points in the loss. Jessica Baids and Chaney Tambling finished with seven points apiece for Augustana.

Elmhurst wraps up the regular season on Tuesday, February 19, by traveling to Wheaton College.
