Bluejays Topple Coe 68-57 In Home Opener

Box Score ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst women's basketball team upped its record to 5-1 on the season by upending Coe College 68-57 in the Bluejays' home opening contest of the 2013-14 season.

The two squads traded buckets for the opening seven minutes before Elmhurst rattled off a 14-0 run to take a 26-14 lead with 8:50 left in the half. The Bluejays extended their lead to 16 points and carried a 42-31 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Coe (2-4) cut the Bluejays' lead down to six points early in the second half, before seven straight points from Elmhurst put the Bluejays back up by 13. Elmhurst went ice cold for the next nine minutes, shooting just 1-of-16, allowing Coe to pull to within two points with 7:17 left on the clock.  The Bluejays responded with an 11-0 run keyed by nine points from Melanie Schwerdtmann to open up a 62-49 lead with 2:25 left. Coe came no closer than 11 points in the final two minutes.

Elmhurst shot 41.7 percent (25-of-60) from the floor, including 57.1 percent (16-of-28) in the opening half. The Bluejays struggled in the second half, hitting only 9-of-32 attempts (28.1 percent). Elmhurst shot 33.3 percent (6-of-18) from downtown and 85.7 percent (12-of-14) from the foul line.

Coe shot 35.1 percent (20-of-57) from the field, including 25.0 percent (4-of-16) from three-point range. The Kohawks won the battle on the glass, outrebounding Elmhurst 41-35. Coe turned the ball over 23 times in the contest, including 13 offensive fouls.

Schwerdtmann continued her hot start to the season, pouring in a game-high 21 points while shooting 9-of-11 from the floor while also battling foul trouble. Fiona McMahon added 12 points and seven rebounds while also dealing with foul trouble. Hanna Lipman added 12 points for the Bluejays. Devin Vaughn and Karen Senette combined for 13 points and 13 assists.

Coe was led by Mickey Hansche's 15 points. Mackenzie Reed added 13 points and five rebounds while Mary Halvorson added eight points and eight rebounds before fouling out.
