Box Score FULTON, Mo. - The Elmhurst women's basketball team opened the 2013-14 season with a convincing 76-52 win over Westminster College (Mo.).
The Bluejays never trailed in the contest, racing out to a quick 10-2 lead and never looking back. Elmhurst led by as many as 21 points in the opening half and carried a 38-23 lead into the locker room at halftime.
In the second half, Elmhurst opened up a 26-point lead and coasted to the 76-52 victory.
Elmhurst shot 55.1 percent (27-of-49) from th field, including 47.1 percent (8-of-17) from downtown. The Bluejays were a perfect 14-of-14 from the charity stripe. Elmhurst dished out 21 assists on 27 buckets.
Fiona McMahon battled foul trouble to finish with a game-high 17 points while shooting 7-of-10 from the floor in just 19 minutes of action.
Melanie Schwerdtmann added 11 points and a team-leading eight rebounds.
Whitney Shaffer came off the bench to chip in 13 points, knocking in 4-of-8 shots, including 3-of-6 from downtown.
Karen Senette added seven points and five assists for the Bluejays while
Devin Vaughn dished out a team-leading seven assists to go with four points.
Westminster struggled with its shooting, finishing the contest hitting just 28.6 percent of its shots (16-of-56). The Blue Jays were cold from beyond the arc, hitting just 2-of-17 attempts (11.8 percent).
Kasey Gatson led Westminster in the loss with 17 points and three assists. Leigh Ann Lutz chipped in with 12 points.
