Box Score ELMHURST, Ill. - A sluggish opening half doomed the Elmhurst women's basketball team in a 67-51 loss to Illinois Wesleyan University.
Elmhurst (9-10, 3-5 CCIW) struggled out of the gate, hitting just one field goal in the opening 11 minutes of the contest. Illinois Wesleyan (13-6, 6-2 CCIW) took advantage of the Bluejays' start, building a 27-6 lead with 7:45 left in the half. The Bluejays committed 16 turnovers in the first half, leading to 15 points for the Titans. Illinois Wesleyan led 35-15 at the break.
The Titans quickly built a 27-point (44-17) cushion in the second half, before the Bluejays mounted a rally. Elmhurst ripped off 14 straight points to close to within 13 points with 13:18 remaining. The Bluejays pulled to within 12 points with seven minutes to play, but came no closer as the Titans' held on for the 16-point win.
Elmhurst outshot Illinois Wesleyan 40.4 percent (19-of-47) to 37.7 percent (23-of-61). The Bluejays knocked down six three-pointers in the contest and shot 33.3 percent (6-of-18) from downtown.
Turnovers proved costly for the Bluejays as Elmhurst turned the ball over 31 times resulting in 28 points for the Titans.
Whitney Shaffer came off the bench to spark the Bluejays in the second half, splashing home four three-pointers to finish with 12 points.
Fiona McMahon recorded a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
Melanie Schwerdtmann added nine points while
Karen Senette and
Katie Swanson finished with seven points apiece.
Illinois Wesleyan had four players reach double figures in scoring. Colleen McMahon led the charge with 16 points while Katy Seibring scored 13. Melissa Gardner chipped in with 12 and Lexi Baltes added 10 for the Titans.
