Women's Hoops Team Falls to Wheaton 67-52

Box Score ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst women's basketball team slipped to 9-9 on the season after fading in the second half in a 67-52 loss to Wheaton College.

The first half was closely contested as Wheaton (14-3, 5-2 CCIW) and Elmhurst (3-4 CCIW) traded baskets as the lead changed hands four times. Wheaton used an 8-2 run over the final 3:24 to to take a 28-22 lead at the half.

Elmhurst closed to within two points to start the second half on back-to-back buckets from Tess Godhardt, but the Thunder responded with a 13-1 run to open up a 14-point cushion. The Bluejays cut the deficit down to 11 points, before the Thunder ripped off 10 straight points to open up a 21-point advantage (51-30). Wheaton cruised to the 15-point victory over the final nine minutes of the game.

Wheaton's defense frustrated Elmhurst's offense throughout the game. Elmhurst struggled to score inside as the Bluejays were limited to only 14 points in the paint. The Thunder outscored the Bluejays 36-14 in the paint for the contest. Wheaton also outrebounded the Bluejays 41-34. The Thunder turned 13 offensive rebounds into 15 second-chance points.

Elmhurst shot 34.8 percent (16-of-46) from the floor, including 46.2 percent (6-of-13) from three-point range. Karen Senette led the Bluejays with 15 points and six rebounds in the loss. Senette shot 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. Fiona McMahon recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds while Devin Vaughn scored seven.

Wheaton finished the contest shooting 44.1 percent from the floor, including 52.9 percent (18-of-34) in the second half. Brooke Olson paced the Thunder with 19 points while Ellie Zeller came off the bench to score 18.

Elmhurst hosts Illinois Wesleyan University on Saturday (January 26).
