Bluejays Fall to North Park in Final Second

Box Score ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst women's basketball team fell to 2-2 in CCIW play after falling in the final second to North Park University 65-64.

Elmhurst (8-7, 2-2 CCIW) led by as many as 11 points late in the opening half, but North Park (12-3, 3-1 CCIW) cut the Bluejays' lead down to just six points (34-28) at the half.

North Park quickly pulled even in the second half as the game's final 20 minutes featured five ties and 10 lead changes. Elmhurst broke a 58-58 tie on a pair of free throws from Fiona McMahon with 2:16 left on the clock. North Park answered back and knotted the score on a Kamauria Acree lay-up with 1:58 to play.

McMahon put the Bluejays back on top with a lay-up with 1:30 to play, but the Vikings countered with a Shaina Yalda jumper in the lane to even the score at 62-all with 1:09 remaining. After an Elmhurst turnover, Yalda put the Vikings on top with a jump shot with just 45 seconds left. McMahon collected an offensive rebound and scored on a put-back with 15 seconds left to even the score at 64-64. North Park ran the clock down and worked the ball inside to Dominikque Williams with time winding down. Williams was fouled on a lay-up attempt with 0.2 seconds left. Williams hit the first free throw to give the Vikings the 65-64 win.

Elmhurst finished the game shooting 42.3 percent (22-of-52). The Bluejays opened the contest hitting 50.0 percent (14-of-28) in the opening half, but shot just 33.3 percent (8-of-24) in the game's final 20 minutes. Elmhurst hit just 3-of-13 shots (23.1 percent) from downtown.

McMahon led all scorers in the contest with a game-high 20 points while shooting 7-of-11. She also pulled down a team-leading nine rebounds. Karen Senette added eight points while Melanie Schwerdtmann came off the bench to score eight points in just seven minutes. Devin Vaughn, Katie Swanson and Stephanie Mitchell finished with six points apiece.

North Park finished the contest shooting 44.9 percent (22-of-49) from the field, including 54.5 percent (12-of-22) in the second half. Acree tallied a team-leading 17 points while Nicole Kruckman and Yalda finished with 13 points apiece. Williams added 12 points for the Vikings.
