Box Score ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst women's basketball team hammered Dominican University 90-47 to open the 2012-13 season with a victory.
The Bluejays scored the game's first 11 points and never looked back, building a commanding 54-18 lead at the half. Elmhurst opened up a 57-point lead in the second half and cruised to the 43-point victory.
Elmhurst used its size advantage to dominate the play inside. Elmhurst scored over half of is points in the paint, totaling 48 points in the lane. Elmhurst also took advantage of Dominican's mistakes, converting 30 turnovers into 51 points.
The Bluejays finished the contest shooting 60.0 percent (36-of-60) from the floor, including 54.5 percent (6-of-11) from beyond the arc. Elmhurst finished with a 31-25 edge on the glass.
Dominican shot only 35.1 percent (13-of-37) from the floor, including 35.7 percent (5-of-14) from downtown.
Five Bluejays reached double figures in scoring.
Fiona McMahon poured in a career-high 22 points, shooting 9-of-13 from the floor, to lead Elmhurst in the win. McMahon added a team-leading six rebounds and three blocks.
Devin Vaughn was a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor to finish with 11 points. After missing all of last season with an injury, Kim Scwerdtmann poured in 10 points while shooting 5-of-5 from the field. She added a team-leading six steals in the win.
Tess Godhardt added 10 points and four steals while
Stephanie Mitchell came off the bench to score 10 points.
Claire Monroe chipped in with nine points while Paige Pitcciotti added seven.
Karen Senette dished out a team-high five assists in the win.
Laura Knieps led Dominican in the loss with 16 points. Katie Budz added 14 points for the Stars.
Elmhurst hosts the Milwaukee School of Engineering on Saturday (November 17) at 1:00 p.m.
