Box Score KENOSHA, Wis. - The Elmhurst College women's basketball team suffered its first two-game losing streak of the season after falling 72-53 at Carthage College.
A sluggish opening half doomed Elmhurst (14-4, 5-2 CCIW) in the loss. Trailing 2-0 after a Bluejays opening bucket, Carthage (14-4, 5-2), ripped off 15 straight points to open up a quick 13-point lead. Elmhurst pulled to within six points with 13 minutes left in the half, but the Lady Reds outscored the Bluejays 26-9 for the remainder of the half to open up a commanding 42-19 lead at the break.
Elmhurst never got closer than a 16-point deficit in the second half as Carthage cruised to the 19-point victory.
Carthage finished the contest shooting 53.7 percent (29-of-54) from the floor, including 58.1 percent (18-of-31) in the opening half. The Lady Reds hit 40.0 percent (4-of-10) of their three-point attempts and outrebounded the Bluejays 37-30.
Elmhurst shot just 34.0 percent (18-of-53) from the floor, including just 21.4 percent (3-of-14) from beyond the arc.
Carthage dominated in the paint, scoring 42 of their 72 points in the lane while limiting the Bluejays to only eight points in the paint. The Lady Reds also converted 21 Elmhurst turnovers into 28 points.
Devin Vaughn scored 16 points and added three assists to lead the Bluejays in the loss.
Tess Godhardt scored 11 while
Megan Ney totaled eight points and eight rebounds. The Lady Reds held Elmhurst's leading scorer,
Meghan Merklein to only five points.
Carthage's starting five accounted for 58 of the team's 72 points. Diana Jacklin led the Lady Reds with 17 points and eight rebounds. Cailee Corcoran added 11 points and nine rebounds while Allison Groessl (13 points) and Dani Ripkey (10 points) also reached double figures in scoring.
Elmhurst will look to end its slide on Saturday when the Bluejays travel to North Park University.
