Women's Hoops Team Drops First CCIW Contest

Box Score ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College women's basketball team had its five-game winning streak snapped and suffered its first CCIW loss of the season after falling 75-86 to 25th-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University.

Elmhurst (14-3, 5-1 CCIW) struggled with protecting the ball, turning the ball over 22 times to Illinois Wesleyan's (13-4, 6-0 CCIW) trapping press. The Titans cashed in on the Elmhurst mistakes, scoring 28 points off of the Elmhurst turnovers.

Trailing 7-5 early in the opening half, ,the Titans used a 21-4 run to open up a 15-point cushion with nine minutes remaining in the half. Leading by 15 with just over five minutes left in the half, the Titans closed on a 24-7 run to build a 45-23 lead at the half. Elmhurst never got closer than a 17-point deficit in the first half.

The Bluejays struggled with their shooting, hitting only 35.3 percent (18-of-51) of its shots. The Bluejays were ice cold from long range, shooting only 9.1 percent (1-of-11) from downtown. The Titans meanwhile shot 40.9 percent (27-of-66) from the field, including 16.7 percent (3-of-18) from three-point range. The Titans converted 18-of-21 free throw attempts (85.7 percent).

The Titans scored 40 of their 75 points in the pain and owned a 47-33 rebounding advantage.

Fiona McMahon scored a career-high 17 points and pulled down eight rebounds to lead the Bluejays in the loss. Megan Ney added 10 points while Meghan Merklein and Tess Godhardt scored nine points apiece for the Bluejays.

Olivia Lett dropped in a game-high 22 to lead Illinois Wesleyan. Melissa Gardner and Karen Solari scored eight points apiece for Illinois Wesleyan.

Elmhurst travels to Carthage College on Wednesday, January 25.
