WHEATON, Ill. - The Elmhurst College women's basketball team was officially eliminated from CCIW Tournament contention after falling to Wheaton College 72-59.
Trailing by one midway through the opening half, Wheaton (18-6, 11-3 CCIW) used an 11-1 run to open up a 10-point advantage. The Thunder pushed their lead up to 13 points before Elmhurst (10-14, 5-8 CCIW) pulled to within seven points (32-25) at halftime.
The Thunder opened up a 14-point advantage in the second half before Elmhurst mounted a rally. The Bluejays used a 16-6 run to pull to within four points with 11 minutes remaining. The Thunder quickly opened up a double-digit advantage and never let Elmhurst get closer than 11 points for the remainder of the game.
Elmhurst shot 40.7 percent (22-of-54) from the floor, including 33.3 percent (7-of-21) from downtown. Wheaton finished the game hitting 50.9 percent of its shots (29-of-57), including 30.8 percent (4-of-13) from three-point range.
Megan Ney and
Meghan Merklein scored 14 points apiece to lead the Bluejays in the loss. Ney added eight points while Merklein pulled down six boards.
Ceejay Harris scored eight points while
Meghan Fitts came off the bench to score nine.
Kelly Brooks paced the Thunder in the win, shooting 7-of-9 to finish with 18 points. Brooke Olson added 15 points and seven assists while Annie Bowen scored 10 for Wheaton.
Elmhurst closes the season by traveling to Millikin University on Tuesday, February 22.
