ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College women's basketball team had its five-game winning streak snapped in a 74-67 loss to Loras College.
Elmhurst (9-2) raced out to a 12-2 lead in the opening seven minutes, before Loras (6-5) slowly started to chip away at the Bluejays' lead. Loras pulled even with 2:34 to play in the half, but an 8-4 run to close the half gave Elmhurst a 34-30 lead at the break.
Loras started strong in the second half, building a 49-42 lead midway through the half. Elmhurst responded with a 9-2 run to knot the score at 51-all with 8:35 to play, but Loras quickly retook the lead on a Kelly Rogowski three-pointer. The Duhawks built a 62-55 cushion with 4:15 left on the clock, but the Bluejays closed to within three points on a
Meghan Merklein lay-up with two minutes to play. A three-point play from Lindsey LaBadie helped the Duhawks put the game out of reach in the final minutes.
Elmhurst shot 45.8 percent (22-of-48) from the floor, including 54.5 percent (6-of-11) from beyond the arc. The Bluejays shot 68.0 percent (17-of-25) from the free throw line. Loras ended the game shooting 41.0 percent (25-of-61) from the floor, including 30.8 percent (4-of-13) from downtown. The Duhawks were solid from the free throw line, shooting 83.3 percent (20-of-24), including 15-of-17 in the second half.
Loras also dominated on the glass, outrebounding Elmhurst 39-29.
Devin Vaughn led Elmhurst in the loss with a career-high 22 points. She added six assists and three steals in the loss. Merklein finished with 21 points while
Tess Godhardt scored 14 for the Bluejays.
LaBadie and Rogowski scored 14 points apiece to lead a balanced Loras' attack. Melissa Herrmann added 12 points and Katie Wheeler came off the bench to score eight. Eleven different players scored points for the Duhawks in the win.
Elmhurst opens CCIW play on Wednesday, January 4, by hosting North Park University at 5:30 p.m.
