BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Elmhurst College women's soccer team nearly pulled of an upset at 15th-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University, settling for a 2-2 draw against the Titans.
Illinois Wesleyan (10-2-1, 3-0-1 CCIW) needed late heroics from Tess Bottorff to earn the tie. Bottorff scored the tying goal with just 7:37 left on the clock to send the game into extra time.
Elmhurst (10-3-1, 1-2-1 CCIW) jumped on the scoreboard first, taking a 1-0 lead just 2:27 into the second half blasted a long drive into the net to put the Bluejays up 1-0.
The lead didn't last long as Molly O'Brien scored off of Tillie Bill's cross less than three minutes later for the Titans, knotting the score at 1-1.
The Bluejays went up 2-1 after taking advantage of a Titans' miscue.
Katie Baschen's drive hit off the head of an Illinois Wesleyan defender and into the back of the net resulting in an own goal.
The Titans got even in the 83rd minute when Bottorff scored off of an assist from Jill Olliges.
Elmhurst outshot Illinois Wesleyan 11-10 in regulation, including a 9-5 edge in the second half. The Titans outshot the Bluejays 3-2 in overtime, as both teams had corner kick opportunities in the extra periods.
Maddie Fitzpatrick recorded two saves in net for the Bluejays while Zoie Samaan stopped five shots in goal for the Titans.
Elmhurst hosts Wheaton College next Saturday (October 22).
