Bluejay Women Beaten at the Buzzer

ELMHURST, Ill. - Lyndsie Long set three single-game scoring records, but it wasn't enough as the Elmhurst College women's basketball team was beaten 85-84 by 11th-ranked Carthage College on a buzzer-beating shot from Katie Klemke.

Elmhurst (14-8, 7-4 CCIW) struggled in the first half and fell behind 46-30 at the break. The Bluejays mounted a furious second-half rally and retook the lead with 5:34 to play on a pair of free throws from Long.

The two teams traded leads for th next two minutes as Elmhurst grabbed a 78-76 lead with three minutes left to play on Long's eighth 3-pointer of the night. The Bluejays opened up an 81-77 lead with 1:24 left, but Dani Ripkey splashed home a trey to cut Elmhurst's lead down to one with just 51 seconds remaining.

After both teams failed to score, Long hit a lay-up with 18 seconds to give Elmhurst an 83-80 cushion. Diana Jacklin hit a pair of free throws with 7.9 seconds left to draw the Lady Reds to within a point. 

Erika Schwartz was fouled on the inbounds play and hit her first free throw to give Elmhurst an 84-82 lead. Schwartz missed the second free throw and Jacklin grabbed the rebound. After getting trapped in the corner, Jacklin passed to Klemke who race just over the half-court line and banked home a 40-foot bomb at the buzzer to lift Carthage to the 85-84 victory.

Long set a new single-game Elmhurst scoring record by pumping in 45 points on 16-of-28 shooting. She surpassed the previous Elmhurst record of 41 points scored by Shannon Forgue in 1986. She also knocked down eight 3-pointers, breaking the previous school record of six. Long scored 31 of her 45 points in the second half. 

In addition, Long also broke the CCIW's single-game scoring record, surpassing the previous record held by North Park's Rachel Pearson Bernero in 1994. Long also added 11 rebounds in the loss.

added 12 points, six rebounds and four assists in the loss while Megan Ney totaled nine points and six boards. Meghan Merklein added eight points for Elmhurst.

Carthage was led by Jacklin's 24-point effort on 10-of-13 shooting. She added a team-leading eight rebounds in the win. Klemke finished with 16 points, including four 3-pointers. Heather Gilmore scored 12 and Rosie Dorn added 10 for the Lady Reds.

Elmhurst finished the game shooting 49.2 percent (30-of-61) from the floor, including 55.6 percent (10-of-18) from downtown. The Bluejays were an impressive 8-of-10 (80.0 percent) from beyond the arc in the second half. Elmhurst struggled from the foul line, shooting just 58.3 percent (14-of-24). 

Carthage finished the contest shooting 57.6 percent (34-of-59) from the field, including 42.9 percent from downtown (6-of-14). The Lady Reds finished the game shooting 84.6 percent (11-of-13) from the foul line.
