OLIVET, Mich. - The Elmhurst College women's basketball team evened its overall record at 3-3 by toppling Olivet College 64-51 at the Olivet Tournament.
The Bluejays jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead and never looked back. Elmhurst never trailed in the contest and Olivet (0-7) never got any closer than two points in the opening 10 minutes of the game.
Elmhurst led by 21 at the half and held Olivet to only 14 points in the opening 20 minutes.
The Bluejays pulled away in the second half, opening up a 24-point (53-29) lead before Olivet closed the game on a 22-11 run to make the final score 64-51.
Elmhurst shot 42.2 percent (27-of-64) from the floor, but only 18.2 percent (2-of-11) from beyond the arc. Olivet finished the game shooting 36.7 percent (18-of-49) from the field, including 31.3 percent (5-of-16) from downtown.
Lyndsie Long led Elmhurst with 12 points and six rebounds while earning all-tournament honors.
Rashida Joiner added nine points and four assists while
Meghan Merklein added seven points.
Erika Schwartz came off the bench to score nine while
Kelsey Monroe and
Claire Gentry scored six points apiece.
Olivet was led by Mellissa Bageris' 13 points. Alison Focht added seven points in the loss.
Elmhurst hosts Washington University on Saturday, December 5.
