Bluejay Women Downed By Calvin 79-66

The Elmhurst College women's basketball team dropped to 2-3 overall following a 79-66 loss to Calvin College at the Olivet College Tournament. 

The game was a back-and-forth contest that featured 14 lead changes and 10 ties for the first 34 minutes. Calvin (4-0) pulled away late to earn the victory. 

The first half featured eight lead changes and six ties as the two teams headed to the locker rooms tied at 35.

Calvin (4-0) opened up a six-point (53-47) advantage with 9:43 left to play, but the Bluejays chipped away at the lead and grabbed a 59-58 lead with 7:28 to play on a pair of Megan Ney free throws.

After Calvin reclaimed the lead with six minutes left, an Erika Schwartz layup put Elmhurst back in front 62-61 with 5:23 remaining.

Calvin responded by closing the game on an 18-5 run to score the 79-66 victory. The Bluejays hit just two of their final nine shots and also committed two turnovers while Calvin pulled away. 

Elmhurst shot 41.8 percent (23-of-55) from the floor, including 66.7 percent (6-of-9) from downtown. Calvin finished the game shooting 45.0 percent (27-of-60), including 40.0 percent (6-of-15) from beyond the arc. 

Lyndsie Long led Elmhurst with 19 points and nine rebounds in the loss. Meghan Merklein finished with 15 points while Ney totaled 11 points before fouling out late in the second half. Kelsey Monroe came off the bench to score eight for Elmhurst.

Calvin was led by Carissa Verkaik's 26 points and 13 rebounds. Verkaik finished the game shooting 10-of-20 from the field. Brook VanEck added 20 points (8-of-11) and five rebounds while Emily Ottenhoff came off the bench to score 10. 

Elmhurst will face the tournament host, Olivet College, on Saturday, November 28.
