Bluejay Women Fall to Coe at Chicago Tourney

CHICAGO, Ill. - The Elmhurst College women's basketball team slipped to 1-1 on the season following an 80-73 loss to Coe College at the University of Chicago Midway Classic.

Elmhurst opened the game shooting 62 percent from the floor (13-of-21) while running up a 12-point advantage with 6:30 remaining in the first half. The Bluejays went ice cold from the floor for the rest of the half, hitting just 3-of-17 attempts (17.6 percent), while Coe quickly chipped away at Elmhurst's lead. 

Coe (2-0) grabbed a lead late in the first half and the Kohawks led 43-42 at the break.

A Megan Ney bucket to open the second half gave the Bluejays a 44-43 lead, but Coe slowly built up an eight-point lead in the second half before Elmhurst started chipping away. A 3-pointer by Lyndsie Long cut the Kohawks lead to just one at 68-67 with 4:30 remaining.  Elmhurst grabbed a 69-68 lead with 3:18 left when Ney knocked down a jumper.

Coe quickly reclaimed the lead on a pair of Kayla Lincoln free throws. The Bluejays missed their next seven straight shots as Coe built a 77-69 lead with just 45 seconds left to play. Coe hit a pair of free throws in the closing seconds to score the 80-73 victory.

The Bluejays finished the game shooting 34.1 percent (28-of-82) from the floor, but Elmhurst shot only 25 percent (15-of-61) over the games final 26:30. The Bluejays were even colder from long-range, hitting just 2-of-18 attempts from downtown (11.1) percent. 

While the Bluejays struggled with their shooting, Coe was red-hot, hitting 53.7 percent (29-of-54) from the floor, including 63.2 percent (12-of-19) in the second half. The Kohawks finished the game shooting 46.2 percent (6-of-13) from beyond the arc. 

Elmhurst outrebounded Coe 45-34.

Long led Elmhurst in the loss with a game high-25 points to go along with nine rebounds. Ney poured in 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds while Meghan Merklein finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds. 

Sarah Anciaux came off the bench to spark Coe with a team-leading 19 points. Kayla Waskow added 18 points and five rebounds while Devvin Rolson finished with 11 points. 

Elmhurst will face either St. Mary's University or the University of Chicago in the tournament's consolation game on Sunday, November 22, at 11:00 a.m.
