ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College women's basketball team dropped to 10-8 overall and 3-4 in CCIW play following a 59-56 loss to Millikin University.
After leading for the first 12 minutes of the contest, the Bluejays fell behind at the break, trailing 31-26 at the half.
Millikin (10-8, 4-3 CCIW) built an eight-point advantage before the Bluejays mounted a comeback. A 17-4 run by the Bluejays gave Elmhurst a 46-41 lead with 11:23 to play. Millikin slowly chipped away and reclaimed the lead on a Tracie Yantis lay-up with eight minutes to play.
The Big Blue built a four-point (56-52) lead with three minutes to play, but a put-back by Megan Ney with 2:26 left cut the lead in half. Millikin pushed its lead to 57-54 with 46 seconds left after Ally James split a pair of free throws. Lyndsie Long netted a pair of free throws for the Bluejays with 28 seconds remaining to pull Elmhurst to within one point (57-56). After an Elmhurst foul, Bethany Wellbaum hit a pair of free throws to give the Big Blue a 59-56 lead with 17 seconds left. After a missed Elmhurst 3-pointer with 10 seconds, Millikin missed a pair of free throws to give the Bluejays one last chance, but Claire Gentry's 3-pointer fell short at the buzzer.
Elmhurst shot 43.1 percent (22-of-51) from the floor, but only 10.0 percent (1-of-10) from beyond the arc. Millikin finished the game shooting 43.2 percent (19-of-44) from the field, and 42.9 percent (6-of-14) from downtown.
Long led Elmhurst and all scorers with a game-high 27 points on 11-of-19 shooting. Ney came off the bench to add eight points while Brittany Bobruk added five points.
Crystal Zeigler and Yantis scored 13 apiece to lead to the Big Blue. Elise Wildman added 11 points in the win.
The win was the 33rd consecutive victory for Millikin over Elmhurst.
The Bluejays play host to Wheaton College on Tuesday, February 3, at 7:30 p.m.
