ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College women' basketball team opened CCIW competition by hammering Augustana College 86-59. Elmhurst improved to 8-4 with the victory (1-0 CCIW) while Augustana fell to 2-11 overall (0-2 CCIW).
Elmhurst led from start to finish, jumping out to a 16-4 lead and never looking back. The Bluejays led by as many as 25 in the first half and carried a 46-27 lead into the locker room at the break. Elmhurst continued to pull away in the second half, building a 32-point advantage and cruising the 86-59 victory.
The Bluejays shot 48.6 percent (34-of-70) from the floor, including 23.1 percent (3-of-13) from downtown. Augustana finished the game shooting 35.2 percent (19-of-54) from the field (19-of-54), including 26.7 percent (4-of-15) from downtown.
Elmhurst's defense forced 22 turnovers, leading to 26 points for the Bluejays. Elmhurst turned the ball over only 11 times, resulting in only nine points for the Vikings.
Four Bluejays reached double figures in scoring. Brittany Bobruk hit 9-of-13 shots to score a game-high 18 points. After missing the previous few games with an injury, Kelsey Monroe returned to the line-up to score 17 points and pull down a game-high nine rebounds. Lyndsie Long added 15 points and eight rebounds, while Meghan Merklein scored 12 points and totaled four assists. Maggie McTeague and Christine Randick both came off the bench to score six points apiece.
Augustana was led by Sarah Rachwalski's 16 points. Lani Kasten added 11 points and nine rebounds in the loss while Natalie Runge finished with eight points.
Elmhurst travels to Wheaton College on Tuesday, January 13.
