Women's Hoops Team Topples Lawrence

ORLANDO, Fla. - (December 16, 2008) - The Elmhurst College women's basketball team upped its record to 6-4 by defeating Lawrence University 76-65 in the Bluejays' second game at the RDV Sportsplex Tournament in Orlando.

After leading by just four (39-35) at halftime, the Bluejays slowly built a 10-point second half lead. Lawrence was able to chip the lead back down to four points with 8:20 to play, but Elmhurst was able to build its lead back to double digits and secure the 76-65 point win.

Elmhurst finished the game shooting 44.4 percent (28-of-63) and 40.0 percent (4-of-10) from downtown. Elmhurst dominated on the glass, outrebounding Lawrence 40-26. The Bluejays also forced 23 turnovers by Lawrence, leading to 27 Elmhurst points.

Lawrence shot 47.1 percent (24-of-51) from the field, including 64.3 percent (9-of-14) from beyond the arc.

Lyndsie Long scored a season-high 27 points on 10-of-17 shooting to lead the Bluejays. Long finished 3-of-4 from downtown and pulled down a game-high eight rebounds in the win. Meghan Merklein came off the bench to score 11 points while Megan Ney finished with 10 points and five rebounds. Brittany Bobruk added nine points and seven rebounds while Claire Gentry scored eight in the victory.

Erin Henzi pouted in 27 points to pace Lawrence in the loss. Henzi connected on five 3-pointers and pulled down seven rebounds. Laura Aerts added 16 points in the loss.

Elmhurst returns to action on Tuesday, January 6, by hosting Vassar College at 7:00 p.m.
