ELMHURST, Ill. -
Matt Sterner scored in the 13th minute to lift the Elmhurst College men's soccer team to a 1-0 shutout victory over Macalester College at a windy Berens Park.
Elmhurst (6-5-4) played with the wind at their back in the opening half and took advantage, scoring just 12:10 into the match. Sterner ran past the Macalester defense and collected a long pass from
Kyle Wright and then beat Scots' goalkeeper Matt Weyer with a low shot to the far corner.
The wind nearly gave the Bluejays a second goal when
Andrew Witzofsky's 60-yard drive bounced over Weyer's head and rolled toward the goal. Weyer was able to recover and make the save before the ball went into the net, keeping Elmhurst's lead at 1-0.
Macalester (8-7) outshot Elmhurst 14-10 in the contest, but
John Reglin was up to the challenge in goal for the Bluejays. Reglin recorded 12 saves to earn his third shutout of the season.
Elmhurst hosts Wheaton College on Saturday, October 22.
