CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Elmhurst College wrestlers Jake Oster and Charlie Curran have both earned All-America honors at the 2010 NCAA Division III Championships.
With three wrestlers representing Elmhurst, the Bluejays finished tied for 14th place in the team standings with 22.0 points.
Oster (18-6) closed out his career as Elmhurst's first four-time All-American in wrestling by placing third at 125 pounds.
Oster, the 2009 national champion at 125 pounds lost his chance to score back-to-back national titles after falling in the semifinals to top-ranked Clayton Rush of Coe by a 10-3 decision. Oster bounced back from the loss to defeat Buena Vista's Austin Mogg 9-6 in the consolation semifinals. He blanked Augsburg's Joshua Roberts 7-0 in the third-place match.
Oster advanced to the semis by defeating fifth-seeded Terrance Clendenin of Delaware Valley 8-6 in the quarterfinals of 125 pounds. Oster scored a pair of wins by pinfall to open the tournament. He pinned Mt. Union's Riki Reynolds in 4:27 in the first match of the day. In the second round, Oster made short work of UW-Stevens Point's Joe Mileski, pinning the sophomore just 38 seconds into the second round.
Curran (32-9) earned the first All-America distinction of his career by placing eighth at 149 pounds.
After dropping his opening round match 9-8 to Luther's Jason Pyle in the final 15 seconds, Curran
bounced back to score back-to-back wins in the consolation round and clinch All-America honors. He edged Lycoming's Isaiah Britton in the second round of the consolation bracket and then defeated eighth-seeded Emanuel Ajagbe of Delaware Valley 3-2 in the third round.
After dropping his consolation quarterfinal match to Matt Mauseth of UW-La Crosse by a 9-4 decision, Curran fell into the seventh-place match. He fell 7-5 to Concordia College's Justin Berens to place eighth.
Junior
Mark Corsello, the Bluejays' third qualifier at the NCAA Championships, was eliminated on the tournament's first day after dropping his opening two matches. Corsello (32-2), entered the tournament as the top seed at 285 pounds with an undefeated record, but had his 32-match winning streak snapped with an opening-round loss to Jon Schmidt of UW-Whitewater. Corsello and Schmidt wrestled to a 1-1 draw at the end of regulation forcing the match into extra time. Schmidt scored a take down in the first overtime to earn the 3-1 victory. Corsello, a two-time all-American and national runner-up in 2009, suffered a 7-5 loss to seventh-seeded Mitch Sander of Coe in the consolation bracket.
