A 1985 graduate, Jim lettered four years for the Bluejays in cross country and track and field. In men's track and field, Jim held the outdoor and indoor records in the 800-meter run (1:50.7/1:53.7) and 1,500 meter run (3.55.3/3:59.0), the 1,600-meter relay (3:20.6/3:26.2) and the indoor record for the 400-meter dash (50.2). Kirby still owns Elmhurst's all-time record for the outdoor 400-meter dash with a time of 48.94 seconds. Kirby won CCIW gold in the 400 dash in 1982 and 800 run in 1984, setting a league record of 1:50.7 in the latter. In cross country, his 25:58 clocking in 1982 was a Bluejay best at the conference meet.
