A two-sport athlete (football and baseball), Purdom once held the school records for passes caught and receiving yards (both single game and career), and still ranks among the Bluejays' top-ten in yards and yards per catch. He started every game for four years (35 games) and as a junior, Purdom even started on both offense and defense. On the baseball diamond, Purdom was a regular player for four years, all of which were winning seasons. He was the team's leader in hits, runs and batting average at various times during his career. Purdom was also a member of the 1970 team that made Elmhurst's first appearance in the NAIA National Tournament.
