Poremba entered the race with the third-fastest time in the nation and crossed the finish line in third place in 35:28.92.
University of La Verne's Lenore Moreno won the national title with a blistering time of 34:25.39, setting a new track record in the process. Calvin's Nicole Michmerhuizen placed second, finishing eight seconds (34:33.75) behind Moreno.
Poremba crossed the finish line almost 12 seconds in front of Dickinson's Sara Patterson (35:40.86).
"I'm very happy with how Alyssa ran," said Elmhurst Head Coach
Erik Guta. "She has worked tremendously hard to get where she is. She spent so many hours training alone and sacrificed so much to get here. She is a perfect role model to her teammates. We are definitely going to miss her next season."
Poremba's third-place finish scored six team points and put Elmhurst in a ninth-place tie after the first of three days at the NCAA Championships.
Poremba will close out her career by running in the 5,000 meters on Saurday.
