ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College wrestling team opened the 2013-14 season with a 35-3 dual meet victory over the University of Chicago.
Tyler Price opened the dual with a second-round pin of Tedd Nwachuku in 4:24 to give Elmhurst a quick 6-0 lead. At 133 pounds, returning All-American
Miguel Venecia scored two quick take downs and back points in the opening period en route to a 7-3 win over the Maroons' Adam Wyeth. Chicago got on the scoreboard at 141 pounds when Charles Banaszak used a riding time advantage to defeat Elmhrust's
Matt Quigley by an 8-7 score.
Ryan Prater needed just 15 seconds into the second period to pin Chicago's Henry Powell and put the Bluejays on top 15-3.
Nick DiNardo gave Elmhurst an 18-3 lead after he hit a take down and near fall point in overtime to defeat Michael McNulty 6-2 at 157 pounds. Trailing 3-1 in the second period at 165 pounds, Elmhurst's
Steve Myers hit a take down right into a near fall to defeat Pal Popoutsis 6-4 and give Elmhurst a 21-3 lead. At 174 pounds, Elmhurst's
Stephan Kunca hung on to edge Steven Franke in a match that featured six reversals.
Danny Balderas hit three take downs and a pair of near falls en route to a 14-3 major victory over Samuel Pennisi at 184 pounds.
Bryce Sellers made his Elmhurst debut at 197 pounds with a 3-1 win ver Mark Meyer, giving Elmhurst a 31-3 lead in the process.
Danny Vargas used a reversal and three near falls to earn an 11-2 major victory over Chicago's Preston Werth at 285 pounds.
Elmhurst travels to Wheaton College on November 19, 2013.
