SHEBOYGAN, Wis. - The Elmhurst College wrestling team, ranked eighth in the latest NWCA poll, improved to 7-2 in dual meet competition by knocking off Lakeland College 28-9.
After Elmhurst receive a forfeit at 125, both teams forfeited the 133 pound weight class. Ryan Earley wrestled the first match for the Bluejays and scored a 7-3 win over Jake Montie at 141 pounds. At 149 pounds, the Bluejays' Charlie Curran followed Earley's victory by pinning Nick Kusta in 2:40.
Lakeland jumped on the scoreboard when Ben Chapman edged Elmhurst's
Zach Crawford 3-2 at 157 pounds. Jake Frias scored three more points for Lakeland with a 5-4 victory over the Bluejays'
Jack Lewis at 165 pounds.
Elmhurst's
Frank Savegnago scored a 6-4 win over Ryan Renon at 174 pounds to give Elmhurst an 18-6 advantage. Lakeland's A.J. Aronstam followed with an 8-2 win over
Mike McNeil at 184 pounds to cut Elmhurst's lead down to nine points.
The Bluejays closed with a strong finish.
Joe Rau made short work of Chris Weber at 197 pounds, by pinning the Lakeland grappler in just 54 seconds. Second-ranked
Mark Corsello finished the dual with a 12-2 major decision over Lakeland's Bill Wood.
Elmhurst hosts the Al Hanke Invitational on Saturday, January 16.
